- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt

- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 8 slices of French bread
- 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
